Your weather app says it'll be 24°C and sunny at the cabin this weekend. What it won't tell you? Whether you'll need a light spritz of bug spray or full combat gear.
Enter the mosquito forecast. It's a real thing that's about to change how you plan every trip to the cabin.
Your weather app isn't enough

OFF!'s Mosquito Forecast tool - or OFF!CAST, as they call it - crunches 15 billion weather data points plus data from thousands of mosquito traps to predict daily bug activity across North America. Six years of validation against 33 million data points means this isn't some marketing gimmick - it's real science.
The system uses five threat levels:
- Low (Green): Safe deck time
- Medium (Yellow): Keep repellent handy
- High (Orange): Gear up before heading outside
- Very High (Red): Don't venture out unprotected
- Severe (Dark Red): Multiple protection layers essential
Just plug in your location for a 7-day forecast. It uses Forward Sortation Areas (your postal code's first three digits), so while there's variation within each zone, it's surprisingly accurate for planning purposes.

Why this matters in Canada
Mosquitoes aren't just annoying - they're the world's deadliest animal. West Nile Virus shows up regularly across the country and can be fatal. In 2023 alone, Canada recorded nearly 100 confirmed cases.
These bloodsuckers are most active at dawn and dusk when humidity spikes. Direct sunlight dehydrates them, making midday your safest window for outdoor activities.
Red flag conditions
Temperature Sweet Spot: 27-32°C is mosquito paradise. Above 35°C they get sluggish; below 21°C they slow down significantly.
Humidity: Above 80% provides the moisture they need to thrive.
Standing Water Hotspots: Clogged gutters, boat covers, decorative features, any forgotten containers, and poor drainage areas around your property.
Weather Patterns: Warm, wet periods followed by sunny days create ideal breeding storms.
Fight back
DEET remains the gold standard for repelling mosquitoes, while permethrin-treated clothing provides weeks of protection. Recent data has shown that picaridin, a newer insect repellent, is at least as effective as DEET against mosquitos while being less greasy and gentler on gear.
The new pre-trip check
Mosquito activity is intensifying across cottage and cabin country. Every mild winter and extended warm period creates more opportunities for populations to thrive.
The perfect cottage weekend isn't about avoiding mosquitoes entirely. Instead, it's about knowing when they'll be worst and planning accordingly.
Next time you're heading up to the cabin, check both forecasts.
Your ankles will thank you.
