Vancouver's outdoor community has a chance to make history this summer. New Zealand outdoor brand Kathmandu is marking its Canadian debut with an ambitious attempt to break the Guinness World Record for most people hiking simultaneously.

The free event, scheduled for Saturday, August 30, 2025, aims to gather 2,000 hikers on Cypress Mountain - that's more than double the current record of 815 set in Iraq's Kurdistan region in 2023.
The 4-kilometer trek follows a moderate route from Cypress Mountain's base to the Sky Chair summit, climbing through the Collins run and T-33 trail. Check-in opens at 9:30 AM, with the record attempt beginning at 11 AM after a land acknowledgement ceremony.
Supporting Local Causes
All proceeds from event merchandise will benefit three local organizations:
- BC Parks Foundation - Working to create world-class parks and Indigenous protected areas
- North Shore Rescue - The volunteer search and rescue team that keeps our mountains safe
- Take a Hike Foundation - Supporting vulnerable youth through outdoor programs
For those concerned about the descent, $12 download tickets will be available for the Sky Quad or Lions Express chairs, with half the proceeds going to the partner organizations.
What to Expect
The trail is rated moderate with some steep sections along dirt and gravel paths. Organizers recommend bringing:
- Comfortable hiking shoes with good grip
- Water vessel (refill stations provided)
- Weather-appropriate layers
- Bug spray and sunscreen
Beyond the hike itself, expect music, vendor booths, and refreshments at the base - turning what could be just another Saturday on the trails into a community celebration.
Registration opens today, July 17 at kathmandu.ca.
For seasoned hikers or people who just love a good mountain view, this is a chance to be part of Vancouver outdoor history - while supporting the organizations that keep our wilderness accessible and protected.
